How we build it

Why our walls and patios do not move

Most hardscape failures in the Black Hills are not material failures. They are base and drainage failures, and they show up in year three once the freeze thaw cycle has had enough turns at it. Here is what happens under the part you can see.

We dig to the right depth, not the fast depth

Base excavation runs deep enough for a compacted aggregate layer sized to the load above it. This is the step that gets shortcut most often, because nobody can see it once it is buried.

Compaction in lifts, with a plate

Base goes in and gets compacted in layers rather than dumped and rolled once. Loose base is why patios develop low spots and why pavers start rocking underfoot.

Drainage behind every wall

Retaining walls get drain rock and a drain line behind them so water has somewhere to go. Water pressure behind a wall is what makes it bow out, not the weight of the soil.

Our own equipment, our own schedule

Skid steers, mini excavators, trenchers, and compactors are ours. Nothing gets subbed out and no start date depends on somebody else's rental calendar.

What we build

Hardscaping and heavy work

Retaining walls

Structural walls that hold back soil, level out a slope, and give you usable yard where you did not have any. Built with proper base prep and drainage so they do not bow out in three years.

Patios & walkways

Paver patios, stone walkways, and stepping areas laid on a compacted base so they stay flat and level instead of settling and shifting. Built to handle Black Hills freeze thaw.

Rock installation

Decorative rock, river rock, and boulder placement with proper fabric underneath so weeds do not take over. Low maintenance ground cover that looks intentional, not dumped.

Border installation

Steel, paver, or stone edging that gives beds a clean line and keeps rock and mulch where you put it instead of spreading into the lawn.

Grading, drainage & heavy machinery

Regrading a yard, correcting water that runs toward the house, site prep, and any large scale dirt work. We run our own machines, so the schedule is ours to keep.

Sprinkler systems

Running irrigation as part of the project? We install and repair full systems designed around your actual water pressure. See sprinkler details.

Common questions

Hardscaping in Rapid City, answered straight

How much does a paver patio cost in Rapid City?

Access, grade, and material choice drive the spread more than anything else. We price the whole project rather than quoting a per square foot number that changes once we see the site, so you know the real figure before we dig.

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?

It depends on the height of the wall and where it sits on the property. Taller walls generally require a permit and an engineered design, and setbacks vary by lot. We check with Rapid City Community Development before we quote so nobody finds out after the fact.

Will my patio heave in the freeze thaw?

Not if the base is right. A properly excavated and compacted aggregate base with drainage lets water move instead of sitting and expanding under the pavers. Patios that heave around here almost always have a thin or uncompacted base.

How long does a retaining wall take to build?

Most residential walls go up over three to five days depending on length, height, and how much dirt has to move. Base prep and drainage take longer than stacking the block, and that is the part that determines whether the wall is still straight in ten years.

Do you sub out the work?

No. Blade's crew does the work with our own skid steers, mini excavators, trenchers, and compactors. That is why we can hold a schedule and why there is one person to call if something is not right.

Can you fix drainage that runs toward the house?

Yes, and it is worth doing before it becomes a foundation problem. Regrading, swales, drain lines, and dry wells all solve different versions of the same issue. We will walk the grade with you and tell you which one your lot actually needs.
