It went down in spring
Spring seeding puts new grass in a footrace with crabgrass right before a Black Hills summer cooks it. Fall seed gets warm soil, cool air, and no competition. Same seed, completely different result.
The soil was too compacted to matter
Broadcasting seed onto hard ground drops it on a surface, not into soil. Core aeration pulls plugs and opens holes for the seed to fall into. That is why we aerate first and seed second, in the same visit.
The seed was big box filler
A lot of bagged mixes are annual rye and coating weight. We use locally sourced cultivar chosen for this climate, so what comes up in October is still there in July.
Nobody told you how to water it
New seed needs light water two or three times a day for the first two weeks, not one deep soak. Most failed overseeding is a watering problem. We leave you a written schedule and we follow up.

When is the best time to aerate and overseed in Rapid City?
Late August through late September. The soil is still warm enough for fast germination, the air is cooling off, and weed pressure has dropped away. Spring is a distant second and early summer is close to a waste of money here.
How long until new seed fills in?
Germination runs 7 to 21 days depending on the cultivar and how you water it. Real coverage shows up by the following spring. Fall seeding buys the lawn an entire dormant season to root before it has to face a Black Hills summer.
Should I seed or install sod?
Seed if you can wait a season and want to spend less. Sod if you have erosion, a slope that is washing out, a new build with bare dirt, or you are selling and need curb appeal now. We will tell you honestly which one your yard calls for, including the times seed is the better buy.
What is pH soil restoration, and does my lawn need it?
A lot of soil around Rapid City runs alkaline, and when pH is off the grass cannot absorb the fertilizer you are already paying for. We test before we treat. If your lawn stays yellow no matter how much you feed it, pH is the first thing worth checking.
How do I water new sod?
Heavy for the first two weeks, enough that the soil underneath the sod stays wet, then taper toward deep and infrequent. Do not mow it until it resists a gentle tug. We leave a written schedule on every install and we check back.
Can you fix bare spots without redoing the whole lawn?
Usually yes. Spot repair means loosening the area, amending it, seeding, and covering it, and it works well when the surrounding turf is healthy. Once more than about a third of the lawn is thin, a full aeration and overseed costs less than chasing patches.
